Selling a Prom Dress 2023

How to Pass on the Dress and Make Some Money When Prom is Over.

A prom dress in 2023 can cost anywhere from $80 to $700. When you add on jewelry and accessories, you could be looking at a total cost of nearly $1,000 on the high end. After putting so much thought and planning into choosing the perfect dress, it seems like a waste to hang it in your closet and see it gradually pushed to the very back because you just don’t know what to do with it.

Of course, if Prom was a dream and you hate to see your dress go to waste, you can always take it to a tailor and have it shortened, even restyled. Another option is to pass it along to a friend or younger sibling. But, if your budget needs a boost, you can sell your dress and actually make some money back.

Where to sell your used prom dress

Poshmark is a popular site and a great option. It even comes with a free app. All you have to do is upload a picture of your dress, and wait for someone to buy it. Chances are good that this will happen. The platform has more than 80 million users and over $200M in available listings—everything from fashion and apparel to home goods and electronics.

eBay is an established favorite for selling just about everything. This platform also has a convenient app, and shoppers get competitive in bidding for items. If your dress is a standout, you could get a good return.

TheRealReal is a digital consignment retailer with some brick-and-mortar locations as well. They take great pride in authenticating every item they accept. So if your prom dress has a designer label and price, you can be sure that it will have the imprimatur and the price it deserves. Once again, this platform has an app and their offering includes jewelry, accessories, and prom shoes!

Facebook Marketplace offers lots of opportunities and even features a specific place for prom apparel. This is still an iconic destination, and they get a ton of traffic around prom time. All you have to do is post a few pics of your dress and your price. In addition to the many Facebook pages for resale, there’s Facebook Marketplace, a digital thrift store where you can buy and sell with ease.

Depop is the place that influencers, bloggers, and fashion junkies go to find everything from apparel (vintage and slightly used) as well as shoes, jewelry—the works! Upload your image and someone is sure to buy it. They have an app and provide a pre-paid label, so shipping is a breeze.

For anyone interested in helping others, there’s a Minnesota-based organization called

Prom It Forward that holds fundraisers and events where donated dresses are made available to young people who couldn’t afford to buy one. Prom It Forward events are often held at local YMCAs, and if interested, you can find more information about this new program on Facebook and Instagram.

At La Jolie MLN Boutique, we have a donation box that you can donate prom/formal dresses.  In turn, we donate these dresses to various organizations/groups including Popup Elmhurst, Inner-City Public Schools Group that collects dresses for under privileged young ladies and few other organizations as they needed.

If you have any questions, or an organization or group looking for dresses for those in need please contact us by completing the form below…
