Who said sheer can’t be hot?

While showing skin
—a little or a lot—
is a hot trend for 2023.

It’s hardly a new thing. In fact, sheer fabrics go all the way back to the flapper days of the roaring 1920s. What brought this about? Prohibition.

During the era of the flapper, women rebelled against the strict Victorian styles of their mothers. They embraced sheer, movable fabric with dropped waistlines and raised hems. The look was seen at speakeasies where women could show off their slender bodies, drink, smoke cigarettes, and dance to the admiration of all.

The sheer trend is still going strong in 2023

As opposed to see-through to the max, the new version focuses on one sheer top, for instance, to give a hint. These days, you don’t want to give away too much. Marie Claire recommends layering a sheer piece into the mix of an outfit. If you need to cover up, put on a jacket or lay a silk over a sheer top. The look is sexy but still classy.

Try a sheer dress over a bikini…or a long sheer blouse over a solid white, menswear top. Or a gorgeous lace dress with sheer fabric. In other words, the variations are as versatile as you are.

Here are some of the best sheer tops, best sheer dresses, and best sheer looks direct from NYC during Fashion Week.
