What To Wear to Lollapalooza 2023
Lollapalooza means “extraordinarily impressive” –Your look should be too.
The first Lollapalooza music festival was held in Chicago in 1991 and has since become a beloved summer occasion. This 4-day event attracts about 100,000 loyal fans – everyone from young children to adults - each day in Chicago’s Grant Park, and features the top trending artists and styles. Music styles run the gamut from pop and rock to hip-hop, punk, metal and breakout alternative acts. Lollapalooza is known for great music and good vibes.
A little history
Lollapalooza is the brainchild of Perry Farrell who had a vision to launch a “farewell tour” for his band Jane’s Addiction. It started with a vision to create a union of artists who hadn’t yet made it on FM radio (there was no social media or online access to alternative artists). The mission was to create a community of loyal fans. Since then, it has turned into a juggernaut where artists and fans celebrate music. As stated in PopMatters, “Lollapalooza achieved for Gen Xers what Woodstock did for the Boomers, becoming synonymous with the “alternative” branding that both marketers and self-aware hipsters coveted.”
Dress to impress and keep it comfy
Grant Park is a beautiful, outdoor venue. You’ll need to include a cover-up in case it gets chilly or it rains. Remember, this is Chicago, so anything is possible. Here are a few comments from reddit that sum it up nicely:
“There are two types of people: those that hide under trees, seek cover, and may complain. Then there are the ones who embrace it, dance harder, and make memories.”
“Get cheap plastic ponchos (the ones from The Dollar Tree rock) to sit on and wear, and a plastic sandwich baggie for your phone.”
“If it rains it’s a blessing. I remember waiting for TLSP for 10 hours and it was 95 degrees and humid. After the rain it was 80 and beautiful. Put your shit in your fanny pack and embrace the rain
Consider your Look
You can make a statement with your look; after all, you want to make memories. We’re all for that. But what kind of statement is the question. I asked my friend’s Millennial daughter (a long-time Lollapalooza fan) who answered my question, “What do people wear to the music festival”. She replied, Gen Z wears nothing. “What?” I asked. “They wear as little as possible,” she said.
While working on this blog, I stopped to pick up some things at Walgreens. While checking out, the young woman at the counter was telling her co-worker about the back pack she found and how great it was and what she was going to wear. “Are you talking about Lollapalooza?” I asked. “Yes,” she replied. I said, “If you were going to recommend what to wear, what would it be?”
Here’s what she told me, “It’s usually really hot and sweaty. You’re there a long time, and you need to have a rain slicker, a compact umbrella, and some deodorant.” She told me she was 16, and a ‘jeans girl.’ I even wear long jeans when the weather is crazy hot.’” I wanted to ask why not cut offs, but I was there to listen. She also added that she’d be wearing a crop top and sneakers.
When I asked if people dressed up for the event, she said, “It’s more dressing down…the fewer clothes the better.” She said that some wear bikini tops and some dye their hair pink, blue, you name it. “You’ll see lots of glitter,” she added.
