What’s the best neckline for you?

…Ask your boobs.

The V-neck may be your best friend

Whether it’s a blouse, a dress, a ballgown, or a t-shirt, the neckline you choose is all about the size of your breasts. For instance, if yours are a C-cup or above you’re best off with a V-neck. Here’s the thing, a v neckline prevents a large bust from looking shelf-like or solid. Remember the uni-boob? You don’t want to go there.

Let’s start with t-shirts because they are a wardrobe staple. For larger breasted women, a flattering V-neck T is easy to find. But make sure the fabric has ample stretch. Solid cotton without any spandex tends to fall in a straight line from the boobs down, making you look big everywhere. If the fabric is stretchy, it will fall nicely at the midriff.

Here are a few examples

The first top Ruffle straps join a straight neckline and fitted bodice that is flattering to the chest

The next is a V-neck loose T with short sleeves, and finally, a scoop-neck T for the woman who is not afraid to call out her best asset, “I’ve got big boob problems” This works!

To go strapless or not.

Here’s beautiful D-cup Anna

Most influencers and fashion bloggers say for big breasted women, strapless is out of the question. But I disagree. There are new fabrics and new options replacing the traditional strapless bra that never stayed in place and pushed out your midriff. You can wear a stretchy, body suit or a corset-style under garment, for instance.

Here’s real, visual proof that a strapless dress works on girls with boobs. My friend’s daughter got married last summer. She is among a very small minority of Asian women with big breasts. Regardless, she found an exquisite strapless gown that actually minimized the size of her boobs.

Okay, if you’re a B-cup, you can wear any neckline, but what about the flat chested?

Keep in mind, top models through the decades have been small breasted, because they can pull off any look. But you don’t want to look like a boy, or to be swamped by your clothes. Most will say avoid the V-neck, but once again I disagree. Here are two V-neck options for formal looks; the white one flattens her out, but the halter version on the black dress shows less chest and creates a sexy look without being vulgar.

Another great look for small-breasted women is the sweetheart neckline. And, if you can pull it off, wear it as a halter. This look would work for dressy events or date nights. Another awesome look is the boatneck. If you’re looking to give your body shape and spice, this is for you.

Some cautions to consider when choosing your best neckline

  • Know your styling goals

  • If you’ve boob blessed, you’ll want an elongating effect

  • No matter your breast size, you’ll want to create a visual balance between your upper and lower body

  • Crew necks are fine for small-chested women; same with turtle necks but a no-no for the chesty

  • Always look for a fabric with stretch, especially in t-shirts and clingy dresses

  • And, whether you are boobalicious or flat chested, avoid the baby doll look. It’s designed for babies and little girls!
