How to Groom for Zoom
We’ve all been there.
It’s an early morning meeting, and you throw on some make-up, put your hair in a pony tail and think, “this should do.”
Wrong.
Every time you appear on Zoom, you’re being judged. And if you’re thinking, nobody looks good on Zoom, you’re wrong. Since this technology has become as ubiquitous as the conference room meetings of old, you need to do some prep before hitting “Join.”
Here are a few tips that will help you up your on-camera game.
Invest in a ring light — ring lighting is a must-have for Zoom, Skype or any kind of video conferencing. A ring light is easy to install and produces a soft light that smooths out shadows and virtually eliminates bags, sags and wrinkles. It produces a flattering, soft glow that flatters your face and makes your works space look inviting and professional. Ring lights sold here. [INSERT LINK TO PAGE ON LA JOLIE MLN SITE]
Sit eye-level to your screen — Most of us look down on the screen. The camera under the face is by far the most unflattering look. The wide angle lens actually distorts your features and invites viewers to look up your nostrils. Not appealing. Sit back a bit further than you normally do. Raise your laptop just enough (books or a box will do) so that you are eye-level with the camera. Turn on your ring light, and you’ll be amazed at the difference.
Dress sharp — Whether it’s a regular check-in with colleagues, a client meeting or an interview, you’ll need to look professional. Solid colors and neutrals are best. A jacket and a crisp white shirt can be dressed up with fun earings. As for hair and make-up, keep it fresh and easy. If your hair is falling in your face, it’s distracting. Looking your best is all about keeping it simple and starting with a good night’s sleep.
a. No low cut blouses
b. Nothing too fitted
c. Make sure blouses have a sleeve
d. Trim your eyebrows
Clean and airy — Most of us have been working from home since the outbreak of Covid. So, you should have a clean, clutter-free workspace. That means no kids, cats or dogs or laundry in the background. Avoid sitting in front of a large book shelf or artwork that takes the focus off you. Missing this step can take you out of the running.
