Looking for that perfect Bat Mitzvah dress?

Mazel Tov! For young women of the Jewish faith, the Bat Mitzvah is a happy milestone. Young girls study hard for this coming-of-age ceremony. The event is grounded in Judeo tradition. For girls, Bat Mitzvah marks a young woman’s entry into adulthood; she officially becomes “daughter of the mitzvahs,” one who is obliged to observance of her faith. There is a religious ceremony followed by a party where family and friends share delicious food, dancing, and a lavish celebration of this age-old tradition.

ABOUT THE DRESS CODE

So, the dress code is typically modest, especially for the religious service. But the party dress can be a bit more fun…think prom-style dress with short sleeves and a modest neckline that is appropriate for a very young teenager.

Do’s and Don’ts for the Bat Mitzvah service

  • Do wear a suit or jacket and tie if you are a man

  • Don’t wear jeans

  • Do wear a long formal or a dressy pant suit if you are a woman

  • Don’t wear anything that shows cleavage, especially if the family is part of an orthodox community – and cover the shoulders

Do’s and Don’ts for party attire

  • Choose a style that brings out the best in you

  • Don’t go for neon colors

  • Think formal wedding guest look

  • Remember to honor the orthodoxy of the family’s faith and dress accordingly

What is the appropriate gift?

Typically, people gift with jewelry or money. Tiffany has a whole line of Bat Mitzvah necklaces and bracelets. Some spell out the celebrant’s name in Hebrew, and there are classic Star of David items. You will also find an array of beautiful (less pricy) jewelry at La Jolie MLN that is especially popular with our younger customers.

For kids this age, the Bat Mitzvah is a big deal—almost like a wedding but the person of the hour is only 12 or 13. My friend Brooke told me a fun story. Her daughter was a figure skater and was invited to a fellow skater’s Bat Mitzvah. When she came home, she was beyond excited. “Mom,” she said, “why can’t we be Jewish? I want a Bat Mitzvah.” This from a Chinese kid!
