In business, the term “road warrior” refers to someone who spends enormous amounts of time traveling for work. That’s an apt description of my life before marriage and kids. I’ve worked in broadcasting throughout my career, starting in sportscasting which had me on the run between the Midwest to the West Coast covering both collegiate and major league baseball, hockey and football. But I always had a passion for community service and tried to fit in charity work whenever a window of time opened up.

I always wanted to write the story of my family’s struggle and their escape to freedom.

My dad was the only survivor among his family of ten from the Assyrian (known to many as the Armenian) genocide. It started in Turkey in 1915 during World War 1 and eventually resulted in the loss of approximately 1.2 million people.

Death. So much death, so much blood. Rusty red littered the Lebanese soil under her feet - tinted the soles of her shoes. War left its stain across her country - houses fallen, bombs ignited, bodies rotting. My mother knew what it was like to contemplate the prospect of tomorrow. Still, she pushed through with faith that one day, she’d find “home” again.

When my mom turned 12, her family packed their belongings, kissed their decaying country farewell, and boarded a flight to America. As their plane danced its way across the Atlantic, swaying among stratus, soaring in a foreign sky not littered with smoke or smog, my mom realized that she finally achieved what she was waiting for. There was no war, no danger.

How did one woman make it up the corporate ladder? She raised her hand.

I got a Master’s degree in Human Resources (HR) and moved out to Los Angeles to be near my boyfriend (now husband.) Praxair is a leading producer of industrial gasses and I landed a job in their HR department. It should come as no surprise; I was the only female sitting at the conference table. I was the HR manager for 3 years, and then moved back to Chicago to get married…

I met my friend Mary Kay when my family moved to Houston for my husband’s job.

During our 6 years there, my daughter became besties with Sofia, and I found a close friend in her mother. Mary Kay is the full package; she’s been a force in business, working for one of Houston’s top real estate developers, became a devoted mom to two girls later than most, and lost her beloved mother to the anguish of Alzheimer’s Disease.

Watching her triumph has been a wonderful example of persistence, courage and love. I’ll let her tell you the story…
